About the Calculator

The calculator produces theoretical weights from the entered dimensions and density. Corner radii for hollow profiles and angles, actual wall thickness for pipes and elbows, elbow angle and centre radius, and manufacturing tolerances can affect the measured weight. Use actual scale weight for final shipment documentation.

TECHNICAL GUIDE

Stainless Steel Weight Calculation Guide

Quickly calculate theoretical weight for stainless steel sheet, pipe, profile, bar, flat bar, angle and hexagonal bar using the correct dimensions.

Which dimensions should you enter?

  • Sheet / plate: width × length × thickness
  • Pipe: outer diameter × wall thickness × length
  • Profilee: width × height × wall thickness × length
  • Round bar: diameter × length
  • Flat bar: width × thickness × length
  • Angle bar: leg width × thickness × length

Where can the result be used?

The theoretical weight can be used for quotations, shipment planning, vehicle capacity, export packing lists, preliminary fabrication calculations and project material planning.

For final commercial weight, weighbridge or product scale results should be used because of manufacturing tolerances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which units should be used?

Enter cross-section dimensions and piece lengths in millimetres. Results are displayed automatically in kilograms and tonnes.

Why can theoretical weight differ from actual scale weight?

Wall thickness, diameter, corner radius, surface finish, weld seam and manufacturing tolerances may cause small differences in actual weight.

Can I calculate several products in one list?

Yes. Add every calculation to the quotation list, change quantities and view the grand total.

Why is 8 g/cm³ used for stainless steel density?

8 g/cm³ is a practical rounded value used in commercial calculations. For greater precision, enter the density of the selected grade manually.

How Is Stainless Steel Weight Calculated?

Stainless steel weight calculation is essential for purchasing, pricing, transport, fabrication and project planning. Sheets, pipes, elbows, hollow sections, round bars, flat bars, angle bars and hexagonal bars are calculated with different geometric formulas.

Select a product type and enter its dimensions, quantity and density to calculate single-piece weight, total kilograms and approximate tonnage. You can add multiple products to one list and request price and availability via WhatsApp.

What Is the Density of Stainless Steel?

Density is used to calculate theoretical stainless steel weight. For practical commercial calculations, stainless steel density is commonly taken as approximately:

8 g/cm³

is assumed.

This value is useful for quick calculations. Actual density may vary slightly with stainless steel grade and chemical composition.

Stainless steel gradeApproximate density
304 / 304L7,93 g/cm³
316 / 316L7,98 g/cm³
4307,70 g/cm³
2017,80–7,85 g/cm³

Default calculator value 8 g/cm³ For a more precise theoretical calculation, change the density field according to the selected material grade.

Stainless Steel Sheet and Plate Weight Calculation

Sheet and plate weight is calculated from width, length, thickness and density.

Basic formula:

Weight (kg) =
Width (mm) × Length (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density ÷ 1,000,000

Example sheet weight calculation

Width: 1000 mm
Length: 2000 mm
Thickness: 2 mm
Density: 8 g/cm³
Quantity: 1

Calculatema:

1000 × 2000 × 2 × 8 ÷ 1.000.000 = 32 kg

The theoretical weight of this stainless steel sheet is approximately 32 kilograms.

How Is Stainless Steel Pipe Weight Calculated?

Pipe weight requires outer diameter, wall thickness, length and density.

Formula for weight per metre:

kg/m = π × Wall thickness × (Outer diameter − Wall thickness) × Density ÷ 1000

Example pipe weight calculation

Outer diameter: 50 mm
Wall thickness: 2 mm
Length: 6000 mm
Density: 8 g/cm³

The theoretical weight per metre is approximately 2,4127 kg/m, while one 6000 mm piece weighs approximately 14,4765 kg olur.

Pipe wall thickness must be less than half of the outer diameter.

How Is Stainless Steel Elbow Weight Calculated?

For an elbow, the pipe weight per metre is calculated from outer diameter and wall thickness. Arc length is then calculated from the selected angle and centre radius.

Elbow weight = Pipe kg/m × (π × centre radius × angle ÷ 180) ÷ 1000

The default option is a 90° long-radius elbow with a theoretical centre radius of 1.5 times the outer diameter. A 45° long-radius and 90° short-radius option are also available. The result is an approximate geometric weight excluding straight-end allowances and manufacturing tolerances; use manufacturer data or actual scale weight for final shipment documentation.

Stainless Steel Profilee Weight Calculation

For square or rectangular hollow sections, the internal void is subtracted from the outer section. The resulting metal area is multiplied by length and density.

Example square hollow section calculation

Width: 40 mm
Height: 40 mm
Wall thickness: 2 mm
Length: 6000 mm
Density: 8 g/cm³

The approximate single-piece weight is 14,592 kg olur.

Real hollow sections have corner radii, so the calculated value may differ slightly from manufacturer tables or actual scale weight.

Stainless Steel Round Bar Weight Calculation

Round bar weight is calculated from diameter and length.

Cross-sectional area = π × Diameter² ÷ 4
Weight = Cross-sectional area × Length × Density

For example, a Ø50 mm round bar, 1000 mm long and with a density of 8 g/cm³, has a theoretical weight of approximately 15,708 kg olur.

Stainless Steel Flat Bar Weight Calculation

Flat bar weight requires width, thickness and length.

kg/m = Width × Thickness × Density ÷ 1000

For example, a 50 × 5 mm flat bar has an approximate weight per metre, using 8 g/cm³ density, of 2 kg/m olur.

Stainless Steel Square Bar Weight Calculation

Square bar cross-sectional area is calculated by squaring the side dimension.

kg/m = Kenar × Kenar × Density ÷ 1000

A 20 × 20 mm square bar has an approximate theoretical weight per metre, at 8 g/cm³ density, of 3,2 kg/m olur.

Stainless Steel Angle Bar Weight Calculation

The simplified cross-section formula for an equal angle is:

Cross-sectional area = Thickness × (2 × Leg width − Thickness)

Actual angles have internal and external corner radii, so small differences may occur between theoretical results and manufacturer weight tables.

Stainless Steel Hexagonal Bar Weight Calculation

Hexagonal bars are normally measured across opposite flats. Enter the across-flats dimension and length in millimetres to calculate theoretical weight.

When ordering, clearly state whether the dimension is:

  • across flats, or
  • corner-to-corner diameter.

Why Do Theoretical and Actual Weights Differ?

It is normal for an online theoretical calculation to differ from actual scale weight. Main reasons include:

  • Thickness and diameter tolerances
  • Actual material density
  • Corner radii in profiles and angle bars
  • Weld seams in pipes
  • Surface finishes
  • Manufacturing standard
  • Cutting tolerances
  • Protective film on sheet surfaces

Calculated values may be used for preliminary cost, approximate transport and quotation preparation. Use actual scale weight for final shipment documentation.
